UNIT I: Some Basic ideas of Chemistry

UNIT XII: Organic Chemistry- Some Basic Principles and Techniques

General introduction, strategies of purification qualitative and mensuration, classification and IUPAC language of organic compounds.

UNIT XIV: Environmental Chemistry

Environmental pollution: Air, water and soil pollution, chemical reactions in atmosphere, smogs, major part pollutants; acid precipitation gas and its reactions, effects of depletion of layer, atmospheric phenomenon and international warming-pollution owing to industrial wastes; inexperienced chemistry as an alternate tool for reducing pollution, strategy for management of environmental pollution.

UNIT IX: Coordination Compounds

UNIT X: Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Haloalkanes: language, nature of C –X bond, physical and chemical properties, mechanism of substitution reactions. Optical rotation.

Haloarenes: Nature of C-X bond, substitution reactions (directive influence of group for monosubstituted compounds only).

Uses and atmosphere effects of – methylene chloride, inhalation general anesthetic, tetrachloride, iodoform, freons, DDT.

UNIT XI: Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers

Alcohols: language, strategies of preparation, physical and chemical properties (of primary alcohols only); identification of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols; mechanism of dehydration, uses with special respect to methyl alcohol and plant product.

UNIT XII: Aldehydes, Ketones and radical Acids

UNIT XIV: Biomolecules

Proteins- Elementary plan of – amino acids, chemical bond, polypeptides, proteins, primary structure, secondary structure, tertiary structure and quaternary structure (qualitative plan only), denaturation of proteins; enzymes.

Hormones- Elementary plan (excluding structure).

Vitamins- Classification and performance.

Nucleic Acids: deoxyribonucleic acid and RNA

UNIT XV: Polymers

Classification- Natural and artificial, strategies of chemical process (addition and condensation), copolymerization. Some necessary polymers: natural and artificial like polyesters, bakelite; rubber, perishable and non-biodegradable polymers.

UNIT XVI: Chemistry in lifestyle

Chemicals in medicines- analgesics, tranquilizers, antiseptics, disinfectants, antimicrobials, prophylactic medication, antibiotics, antacids, antihistamines.

Chemicals in food- preservatives, artificial sweetening agents, elementary plan of antioxidants.
